A grand sight: 68 year-old accompanies Year One granddaughter on first school day

IPOH: It was a memorable moment for a 68-year-old grandmother who accompanied her granddaughter on the first day of school at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pos Raya in Kampung Kepayang here today.

Wak Atek Alang, who took a bus to the school, said she has been taking care of her granddaughter, Manisa Suzairi Riana, since she was born.

"Just like her mother, I, too, did not want to miss this moment on her first day of school.

"I used to feed her at home, and she is a very kind and helpful granddaughter," she said.

Manisa said she was happy to have her grandmother at school with her today.

"I have to wake up as early as 5am to get to school by bus. (But) my grandmother also came with me by bus. As long as she is with me, I will be happy," she said.

There were no pupils crying or throwing tantrums on the first day of school here.

A check by the New Straits Times found that all Year One students were well-mannered and behaving themselves.

Headmaster Azmi Mat Adam said Year One pupils at the school increased from 34 last year to 41 this year.

"The Orang Asli community here are also sending their children to school at seven years old.

"A few years back, a lot of them would send their children only by Year Two or Three. (This had been happening every year) but not this year," he said, adding that the school catered to a total of 528 Orang Asli pupils from 10 Orang Asli villages.
