3 Chambers of Commerce join forces to elevate Klang to 'city' status

KLANG: The Klang Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCCI) is galvanising its efforts to get the township of Klang granted city-status by roping in the Malay Chamber of Commerce for the State of Selangor, and the Klang Indian Chamber of Commerce as project partners.

Called 'Klang City Rejuvenation' (KCR), which was spearheaded by KCCCI in 2016, the initiative aims to make Klang a highly-liveable and sustainable city, and elevate it to city status in the process.

Ter Leong Leng, the working chairman of the committee for KCR, said that Klang is determined to overcome the perception that it is a dirty, dangerous and inaccessible spot.

Ter said that through the KCR project, organisers of the effort hope to raise awareness of the numerous historical and cultural, as well as food attractions, that Klang has to offer.

Khazanah Nasional Bhd's wholly-owned subsidiary, Think City Sdn Bhd, is acting as advisor to the KCR project.

Khazanah's Think City is an urban regeneration body that works towards creating sustainable and liveable cities.

At the media conference to announce the handful of programmes for 2017 (including an ongoing photo contest and a treasure hunt in March), the organisers said that no funds are available for the KCR project.

However, advisor to KCCCI presidential council, Dr Chia Song Kun, said that he has managed to secure donations of RM50,000 each from five companies to be channelled as seed money for the project.

"Funding won't be an issue. What we need is good work from the stakeholders and our local communities here to make this a success," Chia said.

Although a minimum of five years for the project’s completion was announced, the organisers did not commit to a specific timeframe as to when Klang is expected to achieve city-status.
