Number of flood evacuees in Terengganu rises to more than 10,000

TERENGGANU: Floods in six worst affected areas in the state have worsened, forcing more evacuees to leave their houses this morning.

The State Welfare flood watch online portal stated that as of 8am, the number of victims increased to 10,734 people from 3,161 families compared to 7,752 people from 2,279 families last night.

The evacuees have been moved to 124 relief centres.

The portal said the worst-hit district was Besut where 4,152 people from 1,147 families were seeking shelter at 51 relief centres compared to 2,320 victims from 618 families at 61 relief centres before.

The portal also stated that in Hulu Terengganu, a total of 3,610 people from 1,161 families were seeking shelter at 34 relief centres compared to 2,836 people from 862 families at 29 relief centres last night .

This morning, 1,597 people from 531 families were seeking shelter at 12 relief centres in Setiu district.

In Kemaman, the number of victims rose to 894 people from 244 families, all seeking shelter at 16 relief centres compared to 611 victims from 263 families at 13 relief centres last night.

In Dungun, the number of evacuees increased to 451 people from 120 families in 10 relief centres, compared to to 358 from 95 families at nine relief centres last night.

In Marang, 30 victims from 10 families are still seeking shelter at the SK Pasir Putih.
