"Drunk" man who robbed convenience store armed with screwdriver nabbed

KOTA KINABALU: A former convict was arrested by police less than 48 hours after robbing a 24-hour convenience store using a screwdriver as a weapon at Taman Indah Permai in Menggatal.

The 23-year-old suspect entered the store premises on Tuesday at 4.55pm armed with a screwdriver and immediately threatened the store cashier, whom he made hand over RM83 in cash.

The suspect also made away with a reload card worth RM48 and three boxes of Dunhill cigarettes.

Following a police report lodged by the 24-year-old cashier and based on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage obtained from the store, the police criminal investigation department team arrested two men near a convenience store at Sulaman Central in Menggatal yesterday at 9.45pm.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Chandra said an investigation revealed that only one of the men detained was involved in the armed robbery.

“The single suspect admitted to committing the robbery, as he was under the influence of alcohol,” said Chandra, adding that police have confiscated a Yamaha Lagenda motorcycle and the screwdriver which was used by the suspect.

The case is being investigated under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code for robbery and armed robbery respectively.
