Civil servant arrested for possessing cloned MPV

KANGAR: The Malaysian Border Security Agency (Aksem) arrested a 26-year-old civil servant from Kangar, Perlis and seized a cloned Honda Odyssey in the process.

According to Perlis Aksem commander Deputy Superintendent Syed Basri Syed Ali, the Honda Odyssey is believed to have been stolen in Singapore before being smuggled into the country.

The man was arrested at an express bus terminal at about 1.15pm on Tuesday following a tip-off.

“Acting on the tip-off, our team followed the man until the bus terminal and detained him. Initial investigation showed that the man has a previous record involving cloned car,” he said in a statement today.

He said the man has been handed over to the Customs Department for further action and the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 which carries a fine of up to 20 times the amount of duty or three year’s imprisonment or both.

According to Syed Basri, the Honda Odyssey was the third suspected cloned vehicles seized by Aksem since early this month.

He said the first two cars, a Toyota Wish valued at RM60,000 and a Suzuki Swift valued at RM30,000 were seized in separate operations on Jan 3 and Jan 4.
