Abang Johari, a hard working and competent politician, says Taib

PETRA JAYA: Newly-appointed Sarawak chief minister Datuk Abang Johari Openg is a hard working politician and well-versed with the state affairs.

Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud said he has known Abang Johari, who is the youngest son of Sarawak’s first Governor, the late Tun Abang Openg Abang Shapiee, since he was 13 years old.

“He comes from a good background, he is a hard worker with good public relations,” Taib told reporters after the swearing in ceremony at Astana Negeri here today.

Earlier, Abang Johari, 66, was sworn as the sixth Sarawak’s chief minister. He took his oath of office before the Taib at about 4pm.

When met after the ceremony, Abang Johari said there would be no changes in the state cabinet at the moment.

“We are still observing the mourning period. I will hold a press conference after the period has ended,” he told reporters, referring to the seven-day mourning period for the late Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

The appointment of Abang Johari came after the passing of Adenan, who was the fifth chief minister of Sarawak.
