Muhyiddin: Pakatan wants institutional reform on govt agencies

EDIT: In an earlier version of the article, it was incorrectly reported that DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang was among the opposition leaders present. The article has since been corrected to omit Lim's name.

SHAH ALAM: Pakatan Harapan pledges to conduct institutional reforms on government agencies if the opposition coalition wins the next general election.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said this was in their aim to increase the level of integrity among government leaders and civil servants.

Muhyiddin, who is the president of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), said the opposition pact also believed that the power of the prime minister should be limited.

"We will focus to on enhancing integrity in the government's administration. We will conduct institutional reformation to increase the integrity of government leaders and civil servants.

"Important institutions like the Attorney General's Chamber, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, police, Bank Negara Malaysia and Election Commission, among others, must be free from any political influence. These institutions must execute their functions as stipulated under the country's constitution and laws," said Muhyiddin in his speech at the launch of PPBM at the Malawati Stadium, here last night.

He was addressing about 1,500 PPBM supporters.

Also present were PPBM chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PPBM deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, as well as leaders from Pakatan Harapan component parties.

They included PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu, and PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali while Pas, which has yet to decide whether they would join PH, was represented by its vice-president Datuk Iskandar Samad.

Earlier, Dr Mahathir delivered his speech in front of initially 2,500 PPBM supporters. However, many started leaving the stadium as soon as Dr Mahathir stepped down from the stage.
