Rural Ministry sec-gen, son, released on bail today

PUTRAJAYA: Rural and Regional Development Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohd Arif Ab Rahman and his son, who were arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for alleged graft, were released today.

The 59-year-old senior government official was ordered released on RM200,000 bail. His 34-year-old son was released on RM25,000 bail.

The release order was issued by magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Wan Ab Rahman.

The duo arrived at the Putrajaya Magistrate Court at 11.10am today, with their faces covered with shirts.

They were remanded for 11 days to facilitate an investigation into allegations of corruption and abuse of power.

Both men were arrested on Jan 4, together with another of Arif’s sons, and were remanded for seven days.

The remand order for the duo was extended for four days, while the 29-year-old second son was released on bail.

Arif was detained at his residence in USJ, Subang Jaya, at 8am on Jan 4, on suspicion of abusing his post and position to accept bribes.

His two sons, who were managers of two different companies, were arrested at the MACC headquarters on the same day after giving their statements. They were investigated for being accessories to commit graft.
