Perodua records all-time high market share in 2016

KUALA LUMPUR: Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) recorded an all-time high market share of 35.7 per cent in 2016 despite a lower sales volume of 207,100 units compared to 213,000 units in 2015.

Its president and chief executive officer Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said that despite a challenging year, all Perodua models from Bezza to Alza took first spot in their respective categories.

"Launched in July, we are happy to announce that the Bezza sold over 36,000 units for 2016, making it the number one compact sedan in the 'A' segment," he told reporters during its full-year performance briefing today.

However, expecting a similar if not tougher market conditions in 2017, Aminar Rashid said Perodua will be reducing its sales volume to 202,000 units with a lower market share target of 34 per cent.

"The market has been challenging for 2016 due to a tough market where consumers were still adjusting to challenging economic condition, the prudent lending guidelines and the stiff competition by nearly all automotive players," he added.

Meanwhile, Perodua grew its export volume by 6 per cent in 2016 with over 60 per cent of its exports going to Indonesia, and aims to focus on its after-sales for revenue growth.

"We are investing more in our after-sales business to further improve our earnings; in fact, 2016 saw many records being made with over 2 million vehicles visiting our servies centres nationwide," he said.
