No 'kap chai' ban, yet

KUALA LUMPUR: There will be no immediate ban on small motorcycles or the ‘kap chais’ in the city centre by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

Rather, a study on the move will be conducted first said Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz. He stated that the decision will only be undertaken after the completion and operation of the second Mass Rapid Transit line.

He pointed out that this move may take place in another two years, based on the completion date of the MRT.

“This is just a proposal. There are many factors that need to be studied before any decision is taken,” he said today.

Amin said they will also hold discussions with various stakeholders including the Royal Malaysian Police Force to get their views and suggestions.

“The period taken before making a decision is to see if the people utilise the MRT, before any decision is made,” he said.

Amin added that DBKL had already barred entry of certain vehicle classes into the city centre at certain designated times such as lorries.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor was yesterday quoted by an English daily as saying that small motorcycles might be prohibited from entering the city centre to reduce carbon emissions once public transportation was available at a reasonable price.
