Myanmar's nod to Malaysian 'food flotilla' mission can help its international image, says Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: Myanmar’s decision in allowing the planned Malaysian ‘food flotilla’ aid mission to enter the country will help paint a more positive image of the former.

Welcoming the move, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Malaysia is also keen on assisting Myanmar by providing a more positive impression on what is actually happening in the Rakhine State.

“We welcome it (the decision to allow aid). Not only do we welcome the commitment by the government of Myanmar, but we would also like to assist them by giving a positive impression to the international community towards what is happening in Rakhine State," he told reporters at the Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers on the situation of the Rohingya Muslim Minority of Myanmar, here today.

Earlier, Zahid had received a courtesy call from Palestinian Foreign Minister Dr Riad Maliki.

Zahid, who is also Home Minister, spent about 30 minutes with Riad, discussing Malaysia-Palestine bilateral relations.
