Two petrol attendants in Tumpat nabbed over fuel smuggling

KOTA BARU: Two petrol station attendants were detained by Kelantan Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry officials yesterday for allegedly working with smugglers to transport subsidised petrol across the border.

They were said to have helped the smugglers fill up between 800 and 1,000 litres of fuel per day.

Its director Datuk Abdul Ghani Harun said the duo, in their 30s, were nabbed at their workplace in Pasir Pekan, Tumpat.

"Both have been detained by our officers around midnight. They were suspected to be in cohort with petrol smugglers in filling up between 800 and 1,000 litres of fuel per day," he said.

Abdul Ghani said the two local men were still being questioned on the extent of the activity.

As a precautionary measure, he said the ministry would monitor closely all the 25 petrol stations located near and along the Kelantan/Thailand border.
