Lorry drivers up in arms over allegedly unpaid EPF contributions

KUALA LUMPUR: The Lorry Drivers Coalition, led by its adviser R Mohana Rani, delivered a memorandum to the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) today, demanding action against transport sector employers who use misleading terms in order to exempt themselves from making EPF contributions for their workers.

Mohana said some lorry drivers' contributions were deducted only from their basic pay.

"According to the EPF Act, their commission is supposed to be included in the deduction.

"But unscrupulous employers, who want to reduce their costs, have changed the term “commission” to “allowance” and “overtime”, which do not count as commission," she said, adding that they have submitted the names of three companies to the EPF.

EPF Enforcement Department head Hardial Singh Dhillon said they will investigate if there is any liability in the case.

"As the group did not provide the EPF with the proper documentation, we have given them until next week to do so," he said after a meeting with the coalition at the EPF building here.

Since the case is from Ipoh, Hardial said the EPF is willing to send enforcement officers from its headquarters here to Perak to conduct an investigation.
