Putrajaya to celebrate International Women's Day by show of pedal power

PUTRAJAYA: In conjunction with International Women’s Day, local celebrities will be joining a convoy of female cyclists in the administrative capital for a fun ride on March 11, 2017.

Themed “Konvoi Berbasikal Wanita 2017”, the star-studded cycling event will feature the likes of Ning Baizura, Erra Fazira, Linda Onn, Elfira Loy, Ezlyn, Serina Redzwan, Vanida Imran, Erma Fatima, Maznah Zolkifli, Betty Banafe, Zahida Rafik and Datin Seri Umie Aida.

Ministers in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said and Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, have also signed up as participants.

Announcing the event at a press conference here was its advisor Datuk Mohd Rahimi Rejab, who is also the senior private secretary of the Federal Territories Minister, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

“We’ve never had such a convoy in Putrajaya before. So we are aiming for 10,000 participants and to make it into the Malaysia Book of Records. This event is free for all women.”

At press time, 5,049 participants have already signed up to show their support.

“We have already exceeded the minimum requirement set by the Malaysia Book of Records which is 3,000 participants,” enthused Rahimi.

“So ladies, don’t worry if you don’t own a bike. Just sign up and come over because we’ve got vendors who will rent you a bike. Rental starts from RM30 onwards.”

Cyclists will have two options, either Route A (10km) or Route B (25km) and flag off will be at 7am on Dataran Putrajaya in Precinct 3.

With just a month to go, radio DJ Linda Onn said she is already training hard for the event. “I’m excited about the prospect of meeting women from all walks of life through this event. It’s a good way to bring all of us women together.”

Known for her sporty personality, TV host Maznah Zolkifli, has urged more women to sign up for the wholesome programme.

“You get to keep fit and walk away with handsome prizes.

“We’ve got more than 1000 lucky draw prizes to give away on top of the grand prize, which is a Proton Saga,” she said.

“Konvoi Berbasikal Wanita 2017” is organised by Badan Kasih Amal Ibu Wilayah Persekutuan and supported by the Ministry of Federal Territories, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Tourism Malaysia and the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.
