DAP's arrogance will cost them Chinese votes in Penang, says state's MCA chairman

GEORGE TOWN: DAP might lose its “fixed deposit” of Chinese votes in Penang, said state MCA chairman Tan Teik Cheng.

Tan said the DAP-led state government has been giving more aid to the Malay community compared to the Chinese community, who has been ignored.

“DAP has become arrogant and (they) are not doing anything because they think they are guaranteed to get the Chinese community’s votes.

“However, this arrogance will cost them their fixed deposit of Chinese votes.

“The Chinese voters are beginning to realise this and with that, change will come soon,” he told reporters here yesterday, after the state’s MCA Chinese New Year dinner.

Tan said the Malays in the state have been receiving more support from the state government, including funding and budget for Islamic developments, jobs and housing quotas.

He said he was not being racist but was merely stating the facts.

“From 2008 to 2015, the state government had awarded 94 per cent of developments to Malay companies.

“Between 2009 and 2014, the DAP government had given RM450 million for Islamic development.

“Since 2008 till 2014, out of the 8,346 jobs in the civil service, only 220 were of Chinese ethnicity,” he said.

Tan said even the state housing quota also leaned toward the Malays at 42 per cent.

In comparison he said, the previous Barisan National government had set the housing quota for Bumiputera at 30 per cent and RM12 million was given to for Islamic development yearly.

Meanwhile, Tan also said that MCA’s success in Penang would determine the performance of MCA in the other states

“MCA’s performance in Penang will be the barometer for its subsequent survival as this is a majority Chinese state.

Meanwhile, Tan hoped that Chinese community in Penang would give their votes in the upcoming general elections to MCA.

This was, he said, to spur on the state’s economic development.

“For example, China’s ‘One Belt, One Road’ (OBOR) initiative could also greatly benefit Penang,” he said.
