Impounded Toyota Corolla in Malacca racks up RM22,130 in unpaid summonses

MALACCA: If you think your car has problems with unpaid summonses, well, take a look at this guy’s vehicle.

A black 1992 Toyota Corolla, impounded in Malacca last Thursday, has racked up a whopping RM22,130 from 444 unpaid compounds and summonses, dating all the way back to 2012.

The car was clamped and eventually towed on Thursday afternoon by Malacca Historical City Council (MBMB) officers after it was spotted parked along Jalan Melaka Raya 13.

Add in the RM200 clamping charge, and RM150 towing fees, the total owed to the council now comes up to an eye-watering RM22,480.

As far as the MBMB is concerned, the Corolla currently holds the record for having the most number of unpaid summonses and compounds in the council’s history.

MBMB inspectorate and infrastructure development officer Md Derus Tompang said the car belongs to a 67-year old man, but it is believed that it was also used by his relatives.

“This car, no doubt, has the highest number of unpaid parking compounds we have recorded," said Md Derus.

“There were 386 compounds which were left unpaid despite being issued reminders.”

He said 54 summonses related to the vehicle have been registered in court for legal action.

Interestingly, all the summonses and compounds were issued for only two types of offences - not displaying parking coupons (RM100 per offence), and for parking outside designated areas (RM50 per offence).

Council officers are now debating as to whether the owner will show up to pay the fines, as it would cost way more than the car is worth.

Checks at online used car sites show similar Corolla makes being sold at between RM4,500 and RM9,000, a whole lot less than the RM22,480 it will take to reclaim the vehicle.
