Dengue on the rise in Perak, 998 cases recorded

IPOH: Perak has recorded 998 dengue cases between Jan 1 and Feb 18, compared to 852 cases in the same period last year.

A total of four death cases were reported compared to one case in the same period last year.

State Health Department said between Feb 12 and 18, 2017 a total of 175 dengue cases were reported compared to 150 in the previous week (marking a 16.7 per cent increase).

A total of 67 localities with active dengue cases have been reported and a total of 10 hotpots, nine in Kinta and another in Larut Matang and Selama districts, identified. Another six uncontrolled outbreak localities and controlled outbreak localities were also identified.

To address this, the department has among others, activated a committee comprising officers from the respective health office, local council and district office to check on vacant lands and properties that are potential Aedes breeding grounds.

“The state Occupational Safety and Health Department was also tasked to lead the Aedes-Free Committee initiatives at all government premises.

“All units and departments under the municipal councils are also asked to carry out Aedes preventive measures including cleaning up as a daily routine with the respective council’s health unit acting as the co-ordinator,” it said.
