Sarawak teacher feared drowned after boat capsizes

BELAGA: A teacher is feared to have drowned after the boat he was travelling in capsized in the Rajang River in Punan Bah, about 65km downstream from Belaga town on Sunday afternoon.

Michael Usat Emang, 59, and his wife, fell into the water after their boat hit a log floating along the river.

Belaga police chief DSP Melay Tinggom said the victim and his wife were on their way back to SK Nanga Telawan after attending a funeral in Punan Sama when the mishap occurred.

"The victim was washed away by the strong river current. His wife, however, managed to swim to safety," Melay said.

The search and rescue operation to find the man is still ongoing, with cooperation from the Belaga police force, the People's Volunteer Corps, the Belaga Volunteer Fire Brigade and longhouse residents. -- BERNAMA
