Lawas family arrested for suspected drug trafficking

LAWAS: A couple and their 34-year-old son were arrested by Sarawak police on Saturday over suspicion of being involved in drug trafficking activity.

The three members of a family, aged between 34 and 58, were nabbed at a restaurant in Lorong Racha Umong here at 7.15pm.

Sarawak Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department chief Superintendent Sahar Abd Latif said the arrest led the police to the seizure of several jewelleries and assets worth more than RM600,000 from a house in Kampung Gaya Lama about 15 minutes later.

The house was located about three kilometres from the restaurant.

“Among the items seized include four cars and two motorcycles, fetching more than RM420,000.

“The raiding party also seized more RM90,000 in various currencies including Ringgit, Brunei Dollar, Pound Sterling and Indonesian Rupee,” he said in a statement today.

Sahar said the police also seized jewelleries worth more than RM35,000 from the house.

No drugs, however, was found in the family's house.

“Preliminary investigation showed that the three suspects have been involved in trafficking syabu for almost a year here.

“They have been detained to facilitate police investigation into the case under Section 3(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (Special Preventive Measures) 1985.” he said.
