Varachaya-Zhaoxuan upset top seeds for first WTA title

KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand’s Varatchaya Wongteanchai and China’s Yang Zhaoxuan claimed their first WTA Tour doubles title in the BMW Malaysian Open at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club today.

The pair avenged their defeat to China’s Liang Chen-Wang Yafan in the Thailand Open final four months ago by overcoming the top seeds 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.

"We are very happy to win here. It is only the fourth time we are playing as a pair and we have achieved a title,” said Varatchaya, who also etched her name in history books by becoming the first player from Southeast Asia to win a title in the Malaysian Open.

Varatchaya-Zhaoxuan received US$12,300 (RM49,962) for their efforts while the runners-up received US$6,400 (RM25,996).
