(Actionline) Are late meter readers driving up bills?

Residents of Section 11, Petaling Jaya, feel cheated about their electricity charges, claiming Tenaga Nasional Bhd had exceeded its cut-off period of 30 days.

One of them, TAM, said the electricity rate increases after a certain amount and because of this, users have to pay more.

“I believe the meter readers are not following the schedule as they always exceed the 30-day period,” he said.

“The tariff for the first 200kwh is 21 sen while those in excess of 300kwh is 55 sen.

“No wonder our bill has gone up steadily the past two months,” he said.

TNB senior general manager (Customer Service) Kamaliah Abdul Kadir said that, despite exceeding the 30-day cut-off period, the bill is calculated based on a prorated basis and not on a higher tariff band.

“According to our records, between August 2016 and February 2017, there were only two occasions where the complainant’s meter was read past the normal billing cycle. These are for the months of August and November, 2016.

“For both months, the complainant’s bills were calculated on a prorated basis and thus, he was not charged more. Prorate is the ratio between the billing period and number of days in the month.”

She said for further feedback on TNB’s services, customers can advised to contact TNB Careline at 1300-885454.
