(Running) Over-the-limit wind measurement denies Zaidatul Husniah national record

KUALA LUMPUR: National sprinter Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli's run of 11.36 seconds in South Africa on Saturday cannot be recognised as a new national record due to a strong tailwind.

Husniah's hopes of erasing the 24-year-old national women's 100m record of 11.50 seconds held by G. Shanti was scuppered by a wind reading of 2.5 metres per second, which is above the limit of 2.0 for record purposes.

However, the time still makes Husniah as the fastest Malaysian woman to run the 100m in any conditions after her effort at the Athletics Gauteng North meet in Pretoria.

The Penang-born sprinter, who also holds the national indoor 60m record, finished second in the race behind South African Allysa Conley, who clocked 11.23 seconds, with Malaysians S. Komalam Shally (11.65) and Siti Fatima Mohamad (11.68) coming in third and fourth respectively.

Husniah, whose previous best was 11.62, also ran at the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics on a wildcard entry and is expected to spearhead Malaysia's challenge in the women's sprints at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games in August.

She is currently on a two-month training and competition stint in South Africa along with 10 other national athletes in preparation for the Sea Games.
