(UPDATE) Over 200 Perak students struck down by Influenza A (H3) outbreak

IPOH: A total of 216 students from three schools in Perak here have been quarantined at their respective hostels after showing symptoms of influenza-like illness between Mac 4 and Mac 6.

State Health Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said 129 females students were quarantined in Sekolah Raja Perempuan Taayah, 84 students from Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman and another three from Sekolah Kebangsaan Klebang.

Of the total, he said six samples were taken at the Sekolah Raja Perempuan Taayah with two of them tested positive for Influenza A(H3) or seasonal flu and not H1N1 as reported.

"Another six samples were also taken from Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman and three of them showed that the students were tested positive for Influenza A(H3).

"All the students have been taken to the clinics and nearby hospitals by the school teachers after complaining of cough, fever, flu and body ache.

"However, they are not allowed to return home, for fear that the virus will spread. As such, the students are currently being isolated at their respective schools.

"The state Health Department is continuously monitoring their condition and usually it will take between five and seven days to cure," he said after visiting the students at Sekolah Raja Perempuan Taayah and Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman here today.
