Another 57 students down with influenza-like illness (ILI) in Hilir Perak

IPOH: Another 57 students from Sekolah Menengah Abdul Rahman Talib (SMART) in Hilir Perak here have been quarantined after showing symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI), making a total of 273 students in the state currently infected by the outbreak.

State Health Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon in a statement today said 41 male students and 16 female students had fallen ill.

"A total of 29 students (16 male, 13 female) are being quarantined at the school's hostel while the rest are confined at their homes. So far, they are in stable condition. Most of them were complaining of fever, cough, body ache and sore throat.

"A total of 15 throat swab specimens were taken and sent to the Public Health Laboratory in Sungai Buloh. The state Health Department medical officers are monitoring the condition of these students and they are not allowed to leave the hostel at this moment," he added.

Earlier today, Dr Mah had visited Sekolah Raja Perempuan Taayah and Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Ipoh where a total of 129 female students and 84 male students, respectively, were tested positives for Influenza A (H3) or seasonal flu and not H1N1.
