Female empowerment screen role for Yuna in Mercedes short film

KUALA LUMPUR: Homegrown singer-songwriter Yuna marks a milestone in her career by having her first starring role in a Mercedes Benz short film for International Women’s Day.

The 30-year-old artiste shared the news about the over three-minute production, titled 'The Female Bond', yesterday via her Instagram account.

The luxury car brand’s website, where the video can be found, stated that Yuna was chosen since she had become a role model and style icon for young girls worldwide.

Part of it read: “Yuna challenges stereotypes one performance at a time, making her the perfect embodiment of the film’s message of strength and community.”

In the film, shot against a hilly Californian backdrop, Yuna is joined by three other protagonists and real-life friends from Los Angeles: Stephanie Cleary, Andrea Nakhla and Anjelica Armstrong.

It shows them frolicking outdoors and celebrating their bond, until they are interrupted by a surprising twist that sheds new light on their friendship.

The short film also features Yuna as the narrator, who recites a poem on modern womanhood and unity.

In it she says: “We feel the pull of one another, and travel toward togetherness, linked in limitless love.

“We build the best house for our bold hearts. We blend into one another, lives united. Merge of colour, harmony of pattern, a mixture of strength, a sturdy combination. Each of our curves is a connection.

“Skin pressed into skin, gestures of resilience illuminate our purpose, watches as we move like one beautiful body. We weave into unison now. We tighten our ties.

“Our stories overlap like lace. When we’re drawn into orbit, wholeness happens. We need not search for more. There’s no better bond than ours.”
