M'sia not waging war with N. Korea: Hishammuddin

MUAR: The diplomatic relationship between North Korea and Malaysia is definitely tense but it will not lead to war.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein shared his opinion on the current relationship between the two nations following a ban in each country preventing the other country’s citizen from leaving.

“I do believe that the relationship between the two countries has reached a tense point but we are far from waging wars on one another,” he said.

Hishammuddin said the tension in the bilateral relationship was affected with the speculation and spread of conspiracy theories over investigations into the murder of Kim Jong-nam, which was openly debated by all.

“Nonetheless, the Cabinet has unanimously agreed that the country’s main focus now should be to ensure the safety of all Malaysians who are still barred from leaving North Korea and to ensure that there is transparency in the murder case investigation,” he said after launching a Muar Umno division event at its headquarters in Jalan Meriam here today.

Hishammuddin, who earlier attended the Muar Umno election machinery preparation meeting also, refuted claims that the on-going Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation on a real estate scandal had eroded the people’s confidence in the Barisan Nasional-led state.

“It’s the other way around actually as the government is upholding the rule of law and regulations and this shows that nobody is above the law, friend or foe,” he said, referring to the case in which a state exco was detained by the MACC.

Hishammuddin also urge the public not to speculate on the issue as investigation is still on-going and he appealed that the exco member should not be persecuted by the media.
