Name order confusion

Delip Singh wants to know if the National Registration Department (NRD) can include the registration of surnames, and if it is possible to do so by amending the National Registration Act 1959.

He said the current system could lead to confusion.

For example, an online ticket booking service recently stated Delip’s last name as “Lal Singh”, which was his father's name.

The National Registration Department said unlike in other countries, the registration of names in Malaysia was done without classifying the first, middle and last names.

It, however, stated that various systems were used by agencies, companies and even banks to register the names of their clients.

“NRD has no control over the systems they (other parties) employ.”
