Lim Chong King sent packing in MSSM semi-finals

KUALA LUMPUR: Tournament favourite Lim Chong King suffered a shocking defeat to Sabah's Neville Baptist Nosius Luaran in the semi-finals of the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) badminton meet on Wednesday.

Chong King, a Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) student who hails from Kuala Lumpur, earlier scored a 15-21, 21-17, 21-17 win over Pahang's Muhammad Iqbal Roslan in the quarter-finals at the KL Badminton Stadium in Cheras.

Neville, however, stunned everyone when he notched a 21-15, 17-21, 21-11 win over Chong King, much to the surprise of BJSS coach Kwan Yoke Meng.

"I am really surprised, this is definitely a shock defeat," said Yoke Meng when contacted.

"However, apart from this particular match, I think the rest of the BJSS players did reasonably well. Hopefully next year, we get to see more of them in the final."

Chong King's BJSS teammate Chia Weijie, had a better day as he checked into the finals for a showdown with Neville following a 11-21, 21-10, 22-20 win over Selangor's Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin in the last four stage.

Weijie, who is set to compete at the Asian Junior Championships in July, earlier saw off Kedah's Ooi Jhy Dar 23-25, 21-11, 21-11 in the quarter-finals.
