Mass wedding realises dreams of 16 Kedah couples

BALING: Sixteen couples tied the knot in a mass wedding reception organised by the Baling parliamentary constituency here today.

Dressed in colourful attire, the couples were treated to a group 'bersanding' ceremony on a large dais before some 10,000 friends and relatives at the Baling Youth Complex.

The sixteen beaming lovebirds came from various backgrounds.

Izam Azizan, 42, and Puziyah Khalid, 37, who are both disabled, said they were happy to take part in the event, as it created a wonderful memory for them.

Izam, from Yan, said he met Puziyah, from Kampung Asam Jawa, during a programme for disabled people.

“We (decided) to take part in this mass wedding with (help) from the Baling Welfare Office,” said Izam.

Orang Asli couple, Zulkifli Kulim, 34, and Salmah Panjang, 33, from Kampung Lubuk Legong, said the mass wedding helped them to save money, and they were happy to be a part of it.

A representative from the Baling Welfare Office said the mass wedding is held once every three months for couples from low-income families.

“This welfare project is aimed at helping couples with limited finances to celebrate the joyous occasion of getting married,” he said.
