Sibu airport reopens ahead of schedule

SIBU: The Sibu Airport resumed operation at midnight after restoration works on its damaged tarmac were completed.

Malaysia Airports Holding Bhd's Sibu Airport manager Zainuddin Abu Nasir said a Malaysia Airlines aircraft, which had skidded off the runway on Saturday, had also been removed, allowing the airport to resume operations.

"Restoration works were done and completed 12 hours earlier (faster) than we expected. Thus, the airport was reopened earlier," he said.

The airport had been shut down to enable the recovery team to remove the Malaysia Airlines aircraft.

"Passengers who will depart or arrive at the airport were told to update their flight details with their respective airlines," he added.

Flight MH2718 from Kuala Lumpur skidded off the runaway upon landing during a downpour at the Sibu Airport on Saturday night. All 67 passengers and crews were uninjured in the 10.17pm incident.
