PUTRAJAYA: The Tan Sri detained since last week over a false claims scandal involving the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) was released on RM25,000 bail after his remand expired today.
Magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Wan Ab Rahman allowed bail for the businessman, in his 60s, who had been under remand for eight days to assist in a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation.
His son, who was remanded with him since April 6 for alleged false claims submissions to the DID, was also released on RM25,000 bail, with two sureties each.
The Tan Sri, who was a contractor appointed by the DID to supply geotubes for river restoration works in Malacca, is believed to have made claims amounting to RM13 million for the supply of 358 geotubes – although his company only supplied 89 units, worth just RM4 million.
Four other DID officers, who are believed to have abetted him in his alleged scheme, were also held to assist in the investigation.
Two of them were released earlier on MACC bail of RM10,000 each, while two others are still in remand.
