Selangor tops list for investment fraud cases

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 324 investment fraud cases involving almost RM100 million were recorded between January and April this year.

According to statistics recorded by the police’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID), Selangor top the list with 98 cases with losses of RM17 million.

This was followed by Kuala Lumpur with 44 cases and total losses of about RM8 million, and Penang with 42 cases.

However, the highest total losses recorded this year were in Johor with RM27 million, followed by Pahang (RM23 million), Selangor (17 million) and Penang (RM16 million).

CCID director Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said based on the recent numbers recorded by the department, many people are still falling victims for scams which promised a good return in a short period of time.

“I would like to advise members of the public to be cautious and always ensure the authenticity of the investment before committing.

Acryl added last year, the department has recorded 1,151 illegal investment scheme with total losses of more than RM200 million.

In 2015, 408 cases were recorded with losses of up to RM70 million.

The statistics also revealed that Selangor has the highest number of cases each year, since 2015, with an average of 30 to 90 cases a month.
