Wakaf land sale scandal: Remand extended for mosque chairman

MELAKA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today gained a three-day extension to the remand order for a former mosque committee chairman here, as investigations into alleged corruption in the sale of wakaf (Islamic endowment) land intensified.

The extension request was granted by magistrate Mohd Anuar Ostadi, at the Ayer Keroh Court Complex, for the former chairman of the Al-Hamideed Mosque in Bukit Cina.

He was arrested on Tuesday, along with his former secretary, on suspicion of selling the endowment land to a non-Muslim, a breach of trust conditions, after receiving a suspected bribe of RM116,000.

Although the remand order for the 61-year old former chairman was extended, his former secretary was released on RM10,000 bail and two sureties.

On Friday, the MACC had also remanded a 66-year-old businessman to facilitate investigations, after he was arrested on Thursday.

Sources believe the businessman to be the buyer in the deal.

Investigations are being conducted under Section 16 (a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, and Section 405 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust.
