Penang food hawkers who hijacked MBPP lorry charged in court

GEORGETOWN: Two business owners of a food stall at Tanjung Tokong here were charged at the magistrate’s court today for obstructing a civil servant from carrying out his duties last Thursday.

Mohammad Haziq Ammar Mohd Hussain, 28, and Abdul Muhaimin Mohd Hassan, 34, pleaded “not guilty” to the charge read out before magistrate Mohamad Amin Shahul Hamid.

The two are accused of obstructing a civil servant from carrying out his duties by hijacking a Penang Island City Council (MBPP) lorry, which was parked in front of their stall near the Bagan Jermal fire station, at about 8.30pm on May 4.

They were charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in jail, or a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, if convicted.

Amin allowed RM7,000 bail with one surety for each of the accused, and set July 4 for mention.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Fatim Hussain prosecuted, while both accused were represented by M. Puveneswaran.

It was reported that the two men had stolen the lorry after their stall was raided by the MBPP for operating without a license.

The duo had also recorded a video of the theft, which has since gone viral online.
