Two Ipoh lorry drivers charged with offering bribe to RTD officer

IPOH: Two men were charged at the sessions court here today with offering a RM600 bribe to a Road Transport Department (RTD) assistant enforcement officer, three years ago.

V. Kumar, 57 and S. Moorthy, 51, pleaded “not guilty” to offering the bribe to Azlee Ahmad as an inducement not to take action against them for driving an overloaded lorry.

The offence was allegedly committed at about 10.30am on Nov 12, 2014, at Jalan Ipoh-Lumut, near Seri Iskandar, under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, and Section 24 of the same act.

Kumar and Moorthy, who are unemployed, could face a maximum 20 years’ jail and a fine of no less than five times the bribe amount, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Judge S. Indera Nehru allowed RM13,000 bail each, and fixed May 18 for mention. Kumar was represented by lawyer M. Kathan, while Moothy was unrepresented.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Wahida Jalaluddin prosecuted.
