Court postpones case of woman driver charged in JB mosquito bike carnage

JOHOR BARU: The magistrate’s court here has postponed the case of a 22-year-old salesgirl who allegedly ploughed her car into a group of teenage cyclists, killing eight of them.

Magistrate Siti Hajar Ali today pushed the date for final re-mention and to set trial dates to June 15, following a request from the lawyers of the woman, Sam Ke Ting.

Her lawyers, Faizal Mokhtar and Bustaman Menon Abdul Hamid Menon, sought a postponement of proceedings to examine documents submitted by prosecutors today.

Earlier, State Public Prosecutor Office director Roslan Mat Nor told the court that he was ready for a trial date to be set and that the prosecution will call 39 witnesses for the trial.

Sam's lawyers sought a four-week period to scrutinize the many documents that were brought to their attention today.

On March 28, Sam Ke Ting claimed trial to a charge of driving in a reckless and dangerous manner, after considering all conditions of the road, including type, condition and measurement, that led to the death of the eight teenage cyclists.

She committed the act while driving along Jalan Lingkaran Dalam, Johor Baru, at 3.20am on Feb 18.

The charge is brought under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
