Kedah Customs seizes RM18.3m worth of drugs, biggest haul this year

BUKIT KAYU HITAM: The Customs Department scored its biggest drugs haul in Kedah this year with the seizure of RM18.3 million worth of heroin, methamphetamine and ketamine.

Its deputy director-general Datuk Zulkifli Yahya said the drugs were seized from a local man at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Customs, Immigration, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex on Tuesday.

He said the 26-year-old man was flagged down about 9.15am while returning from southern Thai in his Proton Iswara.

"Upon inspection, we found 154kg of heroin, 38kg of methamphetamine and 6kg of ketamine stacked in the trunk, covered by modified speaker compartment.

"Following his arrest, we picked up another man, aged 36, from Alor Star," he told a press conference here today.

Zulkifli said investigation revealed that the drugs were sourced from Thailand and was meant domestic and also possibly foreign markets.

Both men are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
