GEORGE TOWN: The magistrate's court today has rejected police's application to extend the remand order of a DAP assemblyman's former aide, detained over an alleged sexual assault on a college student.
The 50-year-old man's two-day remand order, which was granted yesterday, expired today.
His lawyer, E. Gnasegaran, told newsmen that they would continue to cooperate with the police.
"If my client is called again to assist investigation, we will make sure he is present," he said.
Gnasegaran told newsmen that police had wanted to further detain his client for another three days to enable them to complete the investigation and record statements from other witnesses.
"We told the court that there was no need for our client to be detained for that," he added.
Earlier, the man was brought to the magistrate's court about 10.25am, clad in orange lock-up shirt.
He bowed his head throughout to avoid press photographers from taking his photos.
Two other lawyers present were S. Rethinakumar and Audrey Wee.
The man, a former DAP branch chief and former municipal councillor, was arrested on Thursday while having his statement recorded by police.
It was reported that the college student was allegedly sexually assaulted by the man, at a dark alley outside an entertainment outlet at Lebuh Pantai here, where she was working as a part-time waitress, on July 6.
It was her first day at work while the man was a regular customer there.
The case is being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code for assault or use of criminal force on a person with intent to outrage modesty.
