Kedah man gets 30 months' jail for smuggling in foreign immigrants

ALOR STAR: The High Court here today sentenced a wireman to 30 months’ jail for smuggling illegal immigrants late last year.

Judge Datuk Hashim Hamzah delivered the verdict after Rohaizam Ramli, 27, pleaded guilty to smuggling two Myanmar people.

He ordered the jail sentence to begin from the date of arrest on Dec 7.

Rohaizam committed the offence at Km1.3 of the North-South Expressway on Dec 7, 2016, at about 8.45am.

He was charged under Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007.

In mitigation, counsel Burhanudeen Abdul Wahid told the court that the offence was Rohaizam’s first and that he regrets his action.

Immigration Department deputy public prosecutor Qatrin Nada Harun prosecuted.
