SEPANG: The Customs Department foiled an attempt to smuggle 25kg of methamphetamine worth RM1.7 million at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday.
Customs deputy director-general (Enforcement/Compliance) Datuk Zulkifli Yahya said the drugs were hidden in six stainless steel water containers, labelled as kitchen utensils on the boxes.
He said the drugs were flown in via Thai Airways from Uttar Pradesh in India to KLIA.
"We got a tip-off from an undisclosed informer," he told reporters this afternoon.
Zulkifli said when customs officers scanned five boxes, they noticed two boxes that had suspicious images.
“So we opened the boxes and we found the drugs underneath the water containers."
He said the address written on the boxes was Aviation Pos Warehouse (Gudang Pos Kastam) in the KLIA Free Trade Zone.
But, he said, the department could not trace the sender and the recipient even after calling the courier service company in India.
He said the case was under investigation and he did not rule out the possiblity of it being the work of an insider.
"If any of our officers is involved, we will take action against them, " he said.
