Army major, retired corporal remanded over false claims probe totaling RM457,000

SEREMBAN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained a seven-day remand order against a unit leader from an army camp here, over the alleged submission of false claims amounting to RM457, 433 last year.

The 35-year-old army major had allegedly conspired with a retired corporal to submit false claims on behalf of about 200 personnel under the former’s supervision.

A source said the corporal was also remanded for seven days starting yesterday. Both suspects will be investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a fine of at least five times the amount of corruption, and a maximum 20 years’ imprisonment, upon conviction.

“Investigations found that the retired personnel was responsible for providing false travel document claims from home to the workplace for army personnel, who at that time, were not around for months as they were involved in an operation.

“The major then approved the claims made through cash cheques using his own name,” said the source.

He added that the claims were made by both suspects without the knowledge of the personnel involved in the unit.

He said the main suspect was arrested at the state MACC office here, yesterday.

When contacted, state MACC director senior assistant chief commissioner Ramli Ismail confirmed the case.
