Police ready to help Thai cops over drugs bust

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are prepared to send a team over to Thailand and help their counterparts in the neighbouring country in the case involving two Malaysians who were arrested there.

The duo were caught while attempting to smuggle about 200kg of drugs worth about 400 million Baht (RM50 million) into Malaysia when they were nabbed in Sadao on Tuesday.

Seven sacks of syabu, which is often used as a party drug, were found stashed in a car driven by one of the suspects.

The man was arrested when he was about to transfer the drugs to another car belonging to the other Malaysian.

Both cars were registered in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

Thai police got wind of the trafficking attempt following a tip that the two Malaysians, aged 35 and 49, had rented an apartment in Sadao and planned to smuggle drugs across the border.

Federal police's Narcotic Department (Intelligence/Operation) deputy director Datuk Kang Chez Chiang said the Thais had informed Malaysian police of the arrests.

“We are ready to co-operate with them.

“We will send our men over to Thailand once they complete the investigations on their side,” he said.
