Three remanded over navy men's deaths; case reclassified as murder

SERI MANJUNG: Three Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) personnel were remanded for seven days today to assist in an investigation on the death of two sailors while in the detention unit at Sungai Wangi, Sitiawan here on Friday.

Magistrate Nur Shaqira Ibrahim granted a seven-day remand request on the three personnel, aged between 29 and 44, starting from today until Oct 7.

All three, who were on duty at the detention room of the RMN Sungai Wangi Communications Unit, were remanded to assist in a probe under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty upon conviction.

Earlier, the three suspects arrived at the Manjung magistrate’s court compound at 8.45am, wearing orange lock-up attire.

The trio entered the court 15 minutes later, and the proceedings ended at 9.45am.

Last night, post-mortems carried out at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital revealed that the two sailors – Nik Muhammad Baihaqy Nik Mat, 28 and Muhammad Lailatulman Mohd Sukri, 26 – died due to bleeding on the lungs and blunt trauma on soft tissue.

They died while in the detention room at 3.15pm on Friday.

Perak Crime Investigation chief Datuk Gan Tian Kee said the three personnel were arrested at 9.30pm last night.

The tree suspects were on duty at the detention room for 10am to 10pm on the day of the incident.
