(Update) 3 politicians remanded over mishandling of federal govt funds for Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Three politicians were remanded for five days to assist the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission's (MACC) probe into mishandling of federal government funds for Sabah.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus granted the application which takes effect today.

They were Parti Warisan Sabah Wira chief Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman, National Umno Youth exco information chief cum Tenom Umno Youth Chief Jamawi Jaafar, and Nation Umno Youth exco member cum Tawau Umno Youth Chief Ariffin Kassim.

MACC investigating officers detained Mohd Azis and Jamawi at the MACC office here yesterday after they were called in to give statements.

Ariffin was detained at the Tawau MACC office yesterday.

The commission was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Rustam Sanip.

Balitus also approved a three-day remand extension for Parti Warisan Sabah vice-president Datuk Peter Anthony and a four-day remand extention for a businessman.

Rustam said the commission had applied for seven days extension for the duo.

"Anthony's counsel asked for shorter remand as their client has health problems. The commission will take him to any government or private hospital for a (medical) check-up," he said.

Anthony and the businessman were detained on Oct 5 at the MACC office here after giving their statements to facilitate the probe over alleged misappropriation of federal-funded projects for Sabah.

Mohd Azis and Anthony were represented by counsel Martin Tommy, Loretto Padua Jr, who is also Warisan's secretary-general, Norazmi Alimat, Jaikol Situn and Cedric Choo.

Counsel Arthur Borine, Shahlan Jufri and Mohd. Azhier A. Farhan Arifin represented Jamawi, while lawyer Hamid Ismail appeared for Arifin.

Meanwhile, the businessman, who was also a contractor, was represented by counsel Edward Paul.
