Police nab Jitra man smuggling ketum, cough syrup into Langkawi

JITRA: The Kubang Pasu district police has foiled a smuggling attempt involving ketum leaves and cough syrup worth RM7,800 at Jalan Alor Biak at 9am on Thursday.

District police chief Superintendent Mohd Ismail Ibrahim said both substances are believed to be headed for the Langkawi market.

Acting on a tip-off, the district’s Narcotic Investigation Division flagged down a car driven by a 41-year-old man from Kuala Kedah.

He said the team discovered six sacks of ketum leaves and seven boxes of cough syrup inside the car.

“Initial investigation showed that the man has been supplying both substances to the island since five months ago. The leaves weigh about 70kg, while the syrup was contained in 708 bottles,” he said in a statement.

Mohd Ismail said the case is being investigated under Section 30(3) of the Poison Act 1952.

The man could face a maximum RM10,000 in fine or up to 4 years’ jail or both.
