Lack of security guard makes this Sg Petani goldsmith shop an easy target

SUNGAI PETANI: In February, a goldsmith shop in Jalan Dewa here lost RM200,000 during a heist.

But as it turns out, this was not the first time the shop has been robbed.

It is understood that the shop, which do not have a security guard on duty, has been struck at least twice in the past few years prior to the February heist.

However, the past incidents have not served as a lesson to the owner.

This evening, the same shop, was robbed, yet again, this time by two men, armed with a pistol.

The duo easily scooped up RM400,000 worth of jewellery in less than five minutes.

In the 5.40pm heist, the two robbers who were wearing crash helmets, coolly walked into the shop and pointed the pistol at the sales staff, warning them to keep silent.

Kuala Muda deputy police chief Assistant Commissioner Saifi Abdul Hamid said one of the men then leaped into the other side of the jewellery display counter while his armed accomplice stood guard.

Saifi said the man even had the luxury of time to pick out high-priced jewellery on the display rack before fleeing the scene with his accomplice.

"This is the second time the goldsmith shop was robbed this year. The first time was in February, where the shop owner reported losses of RM200,000.

"Prior to the incidents, the same shop had been robbed at least twice over the past several years. The fact that the goldsmith does not hire security guard makes the shop an easy target," he said.
