Nizar awarded RM200,000 damages in defamation suit

IPOH: Perak Amanah deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin was awarded RM200,000 damages by the Sessions Court today in a defamation suit filed against Perak Pas Commissioner Razman Zakaria over the latter's "secular" remarks.

Judge D. Sunita Kaur Jessy said the court was satisfied that a statement by Razman against the plaintiff, which was published in Sinar Harian on June 2, 2015, titled "Nizar's Approach similar to DAP" was defamatory.

Nizar, who is former Perak Pas deputy chairman, had two years ago filed the suit against Razman for his statement that Nizar had supported secular concept brought by DAP and that he should join the party.

The former Perak Menteri Besar had filed a RM3 million suit in 2015.

He had said that Razman's statement was defamatory and had tarnished his image as a politician.

The plaintiff was represented by Asmuni Awi and Fitri Asmuni while the defendant was represented by Mohd Zamri Ibrahim and Ahmad Azhar Sharin.

When met outside the court, Zamri said he would consult his client whether to file an appeal at the High Court.

Following the news report in 2015, Nizar had asked for an apology in court.

Razman however rejected this and said in his counter suit that Nizar had defamed him based on several media reports.
