Man charged with abuse of son, neglect and failing to register the boy's birth claims trial

KUALA LUMPUR: A man accused of abusing his seven-year-old son, leaving the boy unsupervised and failing to register his birth, claimed trial here.

The 32-year-old jobless man pleaded not guilty to the charges before Sessions court judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah here.

On the first count, he was accused of abusing the boy who suffered second degree burns on some parts of his body.

He was alleged to have committed the offence at a house in Wangsa Maju, here at 8pm on Oct 1.

The charge under Section 31 (1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 carries a fine of not exceeding RM50,000 and an imprisonment term of not more than 20 years or both, if convicted.

On the second charge, he was accused of intentionally leaving the child without supervision while the boy was injured. He allegedly committed the offence at the same place at 11am on Oct 8.

His charge under Section 33 (1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 carries a maximum fine of RM5,000 or an imprisonment term of not more than two years or both, if convicted.

On the third count, the accused was charged with failing to register the birth of the boy between May 2009 and June 2009 which is an offence under Section 35 of the Births and Deaths Act 1957. The charge carries a RM250 fine.

In pleading for minimum bail, the unrepresented accused merely told the court that he needed to take care of his children who are still little as there is no one to take care of them.

The judge offered no bail and fixed Jan 19, next year for mention. Deputy public prosecutor Nur Akmal Farhan Aziz prosecuted.
