Duo remanded over theft of Sleeping Buddha statue

GEORGE TOWN: Police have obtained a two-day remand order against a duo detained for allegedly stealing a 91-year-old Sleeping Buddha statue from the Penang Buddhist Association at Jalan Anson here last week.

The 29-year-old unemployed woman and 36-year-old male antique dealer were brought to the court here at about 11.30am on Saturday.

High court senior assistant registrar Ahmad Armi Najmudin granted the police’s request for the duo to be remanded until Sunday.

Police arrested the two on separate occasions on Friday in connection with the RM10,000 statue, which was stolen on Dec 11 at about 8am.

The statue was only realised missing 10 days later, and the association’s secretary immediately lodged a police report on Wednesday.

Closed circuit television (CCTV) footage of the duo placing the statue in a bag and fleeing with it in a car was crucial in helping police track them down.
