RM10mil worth of liquor, cigarettes seized in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Customs Department has confiscated RM10 million worth of smuggled liquor and cigarettes in recent raids here and Tawau.

Its state deputy director general Datuk Zulkifli Yahya said the first raid on Jan 8 involved the seizure of 1,076 cartons of ‘Cool Beer’ from a lorry at Kampung Kasigui in Penampang.

“The lorry was abandoned and our investigation revealed the liquor were not taxed.

“Efforts are being made to track down the owner of the lorry,” he said.

Also present was state Customs director Datuk Hamza Sundang.

Last Friday, the department seized two containers of ‘Tiger Beers’ at the Sepanggar Port.

Zulkifli added that the containers originated from Singapore and had earlier been declared as detergent and chemical.

A 44-year-old man, believed to be the delivery agent, has been arrested to facilitate investigation.

Meanwhile, on the same day, the department also stopped an attempt to smuggle 1,075 packets of cigarettes at Tawau port and detained a man in his 40s for further investigation.
